Western and Northern Cape residents face major disruptions as cold front triggers storms and flooding

South Africans in the Western, Northern, and Eastern Cape should brace themselves—an intense cold front is set to hit this Wednesday, June 25.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a stern warning as this winter storm threatens to bring dangerous weather conditions across large parts of the country.

Let’s break down what you need to know so you can stay safe and prepared.

Heavy Rainfall Could Lead to Flash Flooding

The western parts of the Western Cape, especially low-lying areas with poor drainage, are expected to see heavy downpours from Wednesday into Thursday (June 25–26).

The rain brings the risk of:

  • Localised flooding

  • Slick, dangerous roads

  • Difficult driving conditions

If you’re planning to be out and about, think twice and try to delay non-essential travel.

Gale-Force Winds Will Batter Coastal and Inland Areas

This storm system is packing serious wind power.

Inland areas can expect strong, gusty winds that could:

  • Damage property

  • Uproot trees

  • Knock out power lines

Along the coastlines of the Western and Northern Cape, winds could reach gale-force speeds.

These will likely cause:

  • Disruptions at ports and fishing zones

  • Waves as high as 5.5 to 7.5 meters

  • A serious risk of boats capsizing and other sea accidents

If you live near the coast or work at sea—stay alert and steer clear of the shoreline when the winds hit.

Snowfall Likely in Mountainous Areas

Winter is arriving in full force.

The cold front could bring snowfall to the western mountain ranges of the Western Cape, with flurries expected to stretch into the south-western interior of the Northern Cape.

Inland regions should prepare for very cold conditions across the board.

Bundle up and keep warm!

Eastern Cape Next in Line

While the storm arrives in the west on Wednesday, the Eastern Cape is expected to face the brunt of the system by Thursday, June 26.

SAWS warns of:

  • Strong, damaging winds sweeping across the province

  • Continued gusty and cold conditions into Friday, June 27

This is particularly concerning given recent flood-related damage in the region, where over 90 lives were lost earlier this season.

SAWS Urges Everyone to Stay Informed and Prepared

According to Rudzani Malala, Head of Disaster Risk Reduction at SAWS:

“Motorists should exercise caution and adhere to safety measures.

The cold front poses risks to life and property and should be taken seriously.”

Here’s how you can stay safe:

  • Keep up with daily weather updates

  • Follow SAWS on social media

  • Watch for Impact-Based Warnings

  • Have an emergency kit ready at home

Quick Safety Tips for the Week Ahead

  • Stay indoors during strong winds

  • Avoid travelling through flood-prone roads

  • Secure outdoor furniture or loose items

  • Keep away from the coast during rough sea warnings

SAWS will continue to issue updates, and local disaster teams, radio stations, and NGOs will help spread critical information—especially to rural or vulnerable communities.
