In a heartfelt gesture, Pope Francis has decided to donate the prestigious Presidential Medal of Freedom to the Metropolitan Cathedral of Buenos Aires.
This honor, which he received from former U.S. President Joe Biden in January 2025, is one of the highest civilian awards presented by the United States.
The Significance of the Medal of Freedom
The Presidential Medal of Freedom is awarded to individuals who have made exceptional contributions to society, world peace, or the prosperity and security of the United States. Only 55 people have received this recognition.
Pope Francis was one of the recipients in 2025, following his decades-long dedication to serving the marginalized, especially in Argentina.
The medal also highlights his global mission of promoting peace, protecting the environment, and building bridges between different faiths.
When Biden announced the award, he called Pope Francis “a light of faith, hope, and love that shines brightly across the world.”
He also praised the pope’s humility and his continuous support for the most vulnerable in society.
A Touching Tribute to a Past Role
Pope Francis, who previously served as archbishop and cardinal primate of Buenos Aires, chose to honor his former home by sending the Medal of Freedom to the cathedral where he once ministered.
The move reflects his deep ties to the city and the people he served before being elected as the leader of the Catholic Church in 2013.
The Metropolitan Cathedral of Buenos Aires held a special ceremony on March 13, 2025, to formally accept the medal.
This date was significant, as it marked the 12th anniversary of Pope Francis’ election to the papacy.
During the ceremony, a Mass of thanksgiving was held, celebrating his enduring legacy and contributions to the Church.
This gesture from Pope Francis speaks volumes about his humility and his connection to the place where his journey in the Church began.
It’s a beautiful reminder of his roots and the love he continues to show for the people of Buenos Aires.
