Canada’s men’s soccer coach, Jesse Marsch, didn’t hold back on Wednesday when criticizing U.S. President Donald Trump for his repeated comments suggesting that Canada should become the United States’ 51st state.
Trump has made these remarks several times, even going as far as calling Prime Minister Justin Trudeau “Governor” of Canada.
During a media day for the CONCACAF Nations League, Marsch called Trump’s words “insulting” and “ridiculous,” and voiced his frustration with the growing tension and “hate-fueled climate” in the U.S.
Marsch Expresses Shame as an American
“If I have one message for our President, it’s to lay off the ridiculous rhetoric about Canada being the 51st state,” Marsch said passionately.
“As an American, I’m ashamed of the arrogance and disregard we’ve shown one of our historically oldest, strongest, and most loyal allies.”
He went on to praise Canada as a “strong independent nation” deeply rooted in decency and ethics, contrasting it with what he described as the polarized and disrespectful atmosphere in the United States.
The Role of Diversity in Canadian Soccer
Marsch, who is American by birth, also highlighted the diversity within his Canadian team.
Many of the players are first- or second-generation Canadians, which Marsch believes reflects the country’s commitment to fairness and unity. “Canada values a lot of fairness and unity,” he explained.
“It’s a place where people believe their differences make them stronger.”
Marsch added that his players take immense pride in representing their country, showing a deep commitment to each other and to their nation.
Marsch Looks Ahead to Upcoming CONCACAF Matches
Looking toward the upcoming CONCACAF Nations League finals, Marsch shared how the recent comments about annexation could serve as additional motivation for his team.
Canada’s national team will face Mexico in the semifinals on March 20, and potentially the U.S. on March 23.
He made it clear that his team’s resolve would be even stronger in the face of this rhetoric.
“I couldn’t be prouder to be the Canadian national team head coach,” Marsch said.
This is a place that embodies the ideals and morals of what life is, including integrity, respect, and the belief that good people can do great things together.”
Trump’s Annexation Comments Stir Tensions in Other Sports
Marsch’s comments come after recent tense moments between the U.S. and Canada in sports, particularly in hockey.
During the inaugural 4 Nations Face-Off, U.S. and Canadian fans exchanged boos during the national anthems of both countries.
Canadian singer Chantal Kreviazuk took her own stand against Trump’s annexation rhetoric, changing the lyrics of “O Canada” to send a pointed message.
Her line, “in all of us command,” was changed to “that only us command,” clearly signaling her disapproval of Trump’s threats.
Trump’s Threats and Tariff Concerns
In addition to his suggestion about annexing Canada, President Trump has also threatened a trade war with Canada, criticizing the country over tariffs on U.S. goods.
With tensions between the two nations running high, Marsch’s comments add fuel to the fire, as they reflect a broader sentiment of frustration with Trump’s ongoing rhetoric regarding Canada.
