In a heartbreaking case, 27-year-old Logan Burnett has been sentenced to life in prison for the brutal murder of his ex-girlfriend, Courtney Mitchell.
Courtney, a 26-year-old mother of three, was violently attacked by Burnett after trying to start fresh following their toxic and abusive relationship.
A Desperate Attempt to Escape
Courtney Mitchell was out with two friends on August 6, 2024, when they came across Burnett in Ipswich, Suffolk.
CCTV footage shows the group crossing a bridge when they suddenly spot Burnett walking towards them.
Fearing for her safety, Courtney and her friends attempt to flee, running in the opposite direction.
Unfortunately, Burnett quickly caught up with Courtney, forcing her against a hedge before attacking her with a long knife.
The attack was merciless, with Burnett stabbing Courtney multiple times, one of the blows so severe that it bent the blade.
Courtney, in pain and fear for her life, was heard crying out, “Am I going to die?” as she staggered away.
Despite her efforts to survive, Courtney succumbed to her injuries and passed away shortly after the attack.
Burnett’s Chilling Behavior and Violent History
Before the tragic attack, Burnett had been on police bail for causing significant damage to Courtney’s new home.
In the days leading up to the murder, Burnett had been sending disturbing threats to Courtney, including a chilling message where he warned he would harm her, her boyfriend, and even her family.
His abusive behavior toward Courtney was not new—friends described how he had physically assaulted her both publicly and privately throughout their relationship.
Even after Courtney moved away to Colchester in an attempt to escape his grasp, Burnett continued to harass her.
His violent tendencies were well known, with a criminal record that included 24 prior convictions for various offenses, including assault and harassment.
The Investigation and Arrest
The day after the murder, police tracked Burnett down to an Ipswich address.
Bodycam footage captured his arrest, showing him emerging from a property in only red underwear as officers ordered him to lie down.
Burnett’s response to his arrest was cold and indifferent, mocking the situation with a comment about Courtney’s death.
During his mugshot session, he even smirked at the camera, showing no remorse for the crime he had committed.
A Life Lost and the Impact on Loved Ones
Courtney’s mother, Samantha Mitchell, read a victim impact statement in court, expressing how deeply she felt that the authorities had failed to act sooner in protecting her daughter.
“If they had done their job correctly, I believe my little girl would be alive today,” she said, devastated by the loss of her daughter.
Courtney’s father, William Hutchinson, spoke about the void left in his life and the pain his grandchildren would carry with them, having been robbed of their mother.
Suffolk Police Detective Superintendent Nicola Wallace also emphasized the department’s commitment to tackling domestic violence, aiming to prevent future tragedies like Courtney’s from occurring.
She pledged to continue working to protect vulnerable individuals and their families from such horrific acts.
Burnett has been sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 24 years, reflecting the gravity of his crime and the devastating impact on Courtney’s family and community.
This case is a stark reminder of the consequences of unchecked domestic violence and the importance of taking threats seriously to protect victims.
