Manchester City Targets Florian Wirtz as They Look to Strengthen Their Midfield for the Post-Kevin De Bruyne Era

As Manchester City prepares for the next phase of squad development, the club has turned its attention to Germany international Florian Wirtz.

The 21-year-old midfielder, currently playing for Bayer Leverkusen, has been a long-term target for the Premier League giants, and interest in him is growing.

With a fantastic record of 27 goals and assists this season, Wirtz is attracting the attention of several top clubs, including Bayern Munich, who are also keen to bring him in.

Wirtz’s Value Skyrockets Amid Growing Interest

Leverkusen is expected to demand a fee of over £85 million for Wirtz, and with two years remaining on his contract, they are looking to secure him to a new deal.

Despite not pursuing Wirtz in January, City is well aware of the need to strengthen in midfield, especially with Kevin De Bruyne’s future uncertain.

The Belgian legend’s contract is up at the end of the season, and with De Bruyne turning 34 in June, his playing time is being carefully managed by manager Pep Guardiola.

Wirtz Seen as Key Part of City’s Future Plans

Florian Wirtz has earned a reputation as one of Europe’s top young midfield talents, and many clubs are lining up for his signature.

Apart from Bayern Munich, Champions League opponents Real Madrid are also reported to be interested.

Wirtz’s impressive performances alongside Jamal Musiala for Germany have piqued the interest of clubs, including City, who see similarities between Wirtz and their own Phil Foden.

City’s Squad Rebuilding Continues as Ageing Core Faces Change

With an ageing midfield, City knows that securing Wirtz could be crucial in transitioning into the post-De Bruyne era.

Alongside De Bruyne, key players like Ilkay Gundogan (34) and Mateo Kovacic (30) are also nearing the end of their prime years.

Bernardo Silva, at 30, is another veteran in the squad.

However, City is bringing in younger talent too, with £50m signing Nico Gonzalez, 23, already impressing in recent games, as well as promising defenders like Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis.

Summer Transfer Plans in Full Swing

Despite spending £185 million in the transfer market recently, City still has funds to spend.

Juventus full-back Andrea Cambiaso is one potential target for the summer, as Guardiola looks to continue rebuilding the squad with a mix of seasoned professionals and exciting young talent.

As the club looks ahead to the future, Wirtz remains a central figure in their long-term plans.
