The Nigeria Malaria Modelling Fellowship (MMF) is an exciting new initiative designed to enhance the mathematical modelling skills of public health professionals in Nigeria.
Through this fellowship, participants will gain valuable insights into malaria epidemiology, including transmission dynamics, and develop critical skills in mathematical modelling that will play a pivotal role in advancing malaria control efforts.
The program aims to equip public health professionals with the knowledge and practical tools they need to become leaders in the field.
A Collaborative Effort for Malaria Elimination
This fellowship is a collaborative project that brings together the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), Corona Management Systems (CMS), the National Malaria Elimination Programme (NMEP), Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), and the World Health Organization (WHO).
These partners are united in their goal to build the capacity of Nigerian public health professionals and empower them to tackle malaria through cutting-edge modelling techniques.
Fellowship Goals and Objectives
The MMF has set several key objectives aimed at boosting malaria control efforts in Nigeria.
These include:
- Increasing the number of highly trained doctoral and post-doctoral mathematical modelers specializing in malaria by 2025.
- Enhancing the ability of the National Malaria Elimination Programme (NMEP) to use modelling approaches for strategic planning and program evaluation by 2025.
- Strengthening the capacity of the Nigeria Field Epidemiology Training Programme (NFETP) to offer its own modelling fellowships by 2025.
Fully Funded Fellowship with Key Support
The fellowship is fully funded, covering all expenses for selected fellows, including logistical assistance for both in-person and online training sessions.
Special support will also be provided to female fellows with children under 18 months, ensuring that their family responsibilities do not hinder their participation.
Eligibility Criteria
The MMF is open to female candidates who meet the following criteria:
- A Master’s degree or higher in public health, epidemiology, biostatistics, bioinformatics, applied mathematics, or related fields.
- Specialized training in malaria or other infectious diseases, especially those with a background in Field Epidemiology training programs.
- A current affiliation with a Nigerian public institution working within the one health framework (human health, animal health, and the environment).
- At least three years of professional experience.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and effective communication in both written and spoken English.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently.
Desirable Experience
While not mandatory, the following experience is highly desirable:
- Post-doctoral researchers or junior lecturers in epidemiology or biostatistics.
- Resident doctors in Public Health/Community Medicine.
- Data management specialists from malaria programs, polio eradication teams, rapid response teams, or other emergency preparedness programs.
- Monitoring and evaluation professionals working in ministries, departments, and agencies across Nigeria’s one health ecosystem.
Institutional Support for Successful Candidates
Candidates selected for the fellowship must have the support of their institution, which must be willing to officially release them for physical training sessions held in Abuja, Nigeria.
Application Deadline
Applications for the fellowship are due by February 16, 2025.
