Gauteng and Limpopo Brace for Continued Heatwave as Temperatures Soar Above 36°C This Week

Residents in Gauteng and parts of Limpopo are bracing for another few days of sweltering heat, with a heatwave expected to persist until Saturday.

After several weeks of rainfall from December to early January, these regions are now facing their first major heatwave of the year, bringing scorching temperatures reaching as high as 36°C in some areas.

Forecast for the Weekend in Major Cities

In Johannesburg, temperatures are expected to start at a low of 19°C on Saturday morning and climb to a high of 33°C later in the day.

Pretoria will experience even warmer conditions, with a minimum of 21°C and a maximum of 35°C.

Although temperatures will dip slightly on Sunday, the heat will remain intense, and there is little chance of rain to cool things down.

Safety Tips for Coping with the Heatwave

Robert Mulaudzi, spokesperson for the City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services, is urging residents to take precautions during the extreme heat.

He recommends staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water and avoiding direct sunlight, particularly between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., when the sun is at its hottest.

For those working outdoors in the sun, Mulaudzi advises taking regular breaks and ensuring continuous hydration to help prevent heat-related illnesses.

Thunderstorms on the Horizon for Other Provinces

While Gauteng and Limpopo continue to deal with high temperatures, severe thunderstorms are expected to impact most parts of KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, and the Eastern Cape in the coming days.

Residents in these areas should remain alert to weather warnings and be prepared for possible disruptions.
