A British tourist has tragically lost his life after being swept into the sea by a powerful wave at a popular natural rock pool in Tenerife.
The incident occurred at the Los Gigantes swimming pool, a well-known spot on the western coast of the island, which was a popular destination for holidaymakers.
Details of the Incident and Rescue Efforts
The 60-year-old man was one of three individuals who faced danger when waves struck the natural pool.
As the situation unfolded, emergency services were quick to respond.
A rescue helicopter, alongside police, firefighters, and medical teams, rushed to the scene to assist.
The man was found face down in the sea, and after being airlifted to a nearby football ground, attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.
Despite the team’s efforts, it was determined that he had already gone into cardiac arrest by the time he was brought to safety.
Two Other Tourists Survive the Dangerous Waves
Fortunately, the other two individuals who were swept into the sea—both women—were able to reach safety on their own.
One woman was later taken to a health center after sustaining minor injuries to her legs, while the other, who suffered from a panic attack, did not require hospitalization.
Ongoing Investigation and Local Authorities’ Warnings
At the time of the incident, it was not clear if the women were family members or friends of the deceased, or what their nationalities were.
Local police have yet to comment on reports that the victim was a British national.
This tragedy took place just before midday at the Los Gigantes natural pool in the municipality of Santiago del Teide, a location often referred to as Crab Island Pool, near the four-star Barcelo Santiago Hotel.
Authorities have cautioned tourists to exercise extreme care in the area due to strong ocean currents and large waves, which have been a hazard throughout the week.
Despite the presence of a concrete wall intended to protect bathers, online travel sites have consistently warned visitors to stay out of the pool when conditions are unsafe.
A spokesperson from the regional emergency response center confirmed the details of the operation, stating: “Emergency services responded quickly after being alerted that three people had been swept into the sea.
The man, aged 60, tragically died after efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.”
