After a difficult period marked by injury setbacks, Bafana Bafana striker Lebo Mothiba is now focused on reigniting his football career in 2025.
His injury while playing for his former team, Strasbourg, last season led to his departure from the club.
But now, with his recovery well underway, Mothiba is determined to make a strong return to the pitch.
Mothiba’s Journey from Strasbourg to Wydad Casablanca
Mothiba had joined Strasbourg in 2018/19 from Ligue 1 rivals Lille.
Over his five seasons at the French club, he managed to score 20 goals across various competitions.
Just as he was regaining his place in the South African national team, a long-term injury derailed his momentum.
But now, after months of recovery, Mothiba is training with different clubs in the hopes of securing a new deal.
Having previously trained in Belgium and at Strasbourg, Mothiba is now focusing on Wydad Casablanca, a top Moroccan club coached by his former Mamelodi Sundowns associate, Rulani Mokwena.
Mothiba has admitted to being a long-time Sundowns fan, so there’s a natural connection there, which made his potential move to Wydad even more promising.
A Big Opportunity That Didn’t Pan Out
The combination of Mokwena’s leadership and Mothiba’s determination sparked hope that this could be the opportunity the striker needed.
A move to Wydad would give Mothiba a chance not only to showcase his skills but also to play at the FIFA Club World Cup.
More importantly, it could provide him with a path back to the Bafana Bafana squad, especially with the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) scheduled for later this year.
However, despite initial signs of success, it has been reported that Mothiba will not be signed by Wydad Casablanca.
According to Austin Ditlhobolo from Goal.com RSA, Mothiba’s trial at the club has come to an end, and the 28-year-old will now continue as a free agent.
What’s Next for Mothiba?
After facing rejections in both Africa and Europe, Mothiba now faces the difficult question of what his next step should be.
While his journey at Wydad is over, there are still plenty of possibilities on the horizon.
As he continues his search for a new club, Mothiba’s passion and determination to return to the pitch will undoubtedly remain strong.
What will be his next move? Time will tell.
