Eddie Howe emphasizes that Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka remains indispensable amid Nick Pope’s injury setback in England

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe recently addressed questions about the future of goalkeeper Martin Dubravka, confirming that it would not make sense for the club to let him go while he’s playing a key role.

Howe, however, did not rule out the possibility of a departure in January.

Dubravka’s Role Amidst Injury Concerns

Mail Sport recently reported that Newcastle is giving Dubravka the freedom to decide his future in January, with an offer from Saudi Arabian club Al-Shabab on the table.

The situation is further complicated by the knee injury of first-choice goalkeeper Nick Pope, who isn’t expected to return until mid-January.

With Pope out, Dubravka has started the last three matches and is expected to continue in goal for the foreseeable future, including the upcoming Carabao Cup semi-final first leg against Arsenal.

Howe’s Stand on Dubravka’s Departure

When asked whether Newcastle might consider selling Dubravka given the current situation, Howe made it clear that losing the experienced goalkeeper right now would not be an option.

“Certainly, we wouldn’t want to lose the goalkeeper that’s playing for us currently, that wouldn’t make sense,” Howe said.

“So, no, that isn’t a deal we would want to sanction currently.”

What Happens If Pope Returns?

Howe also discussed the possibility of bringing in a replacement should Dubravka leave once Pope is fit.

“These are questions that we have to find answers to,” he acknowledged.

“The Martin situation isn’t clear-cut, so let’s wait and see what happens in the next few weeks.”

Praise for Dubravka’s Performances

Howe has been pleased with Dubravka’s recent performances, noting how the goalkeeper has brought calm and composure to the team.

He highlighted a crucial save Dubravka made in the match against Ipswich when the score was 1-0.

“Let’s not forget the one he made at 1-0 against Ipswich, which was a big moment in the game,” Howe added.

Overall, Howe expressed his satisfaction with Dubravka’s contributions and his ongoing role as the team’s goalkeeper.
