Mpumalanga Police in South Africa Launch Investigation into the Tragic Death of a Caretaker Mauled by a Pitbull at His Employer’s Property in Mmametlhake

A disturbing event unfolded in Mpumalanga where a man lost his life in a shocking encounter with a pitbull.

The incident occurred on Friday, October 18, in Marapyane, Mmametlhake, leaving the local community in disbelief.

Background of the Victim

The man, who had been living in his employer’s yard, served as the caretaker for the pitbulls.

It’s reported that these dogs were usually confined to their kennels and only let out for patrols between 1:00 and 4:30 PM.

The Circumstances of the Attack

According to police reports, the 58-year-old victim went out on the evening of Thursday, October 17.

When he returned to his accommodation early the next morning, he was tragically attacked by the dog.

He was discovered lying on the ground with serious injuries by a security guard shortly thereafter.

Response from Authorities

Colonel Donald Mdhluli from the South African Police Service (SAPS) shared that upon the authorities’ arrival, the victim was found unresponsive, with visible injuries.

Sadly, medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene. The employer promptly reported the incident to the police.

Dog’s Fate and Ongoing Investigation

In a swift response, the SPCA euthanized the pitbull involved in the attack on Saturday, October 19.

Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, the acting Mpumalanga police commissioner, expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased and confirmed that an inquest is underway to uncover the details surrounding this tragic incident.

Call for Community Support

Mkhwanazi urged the community to remain calm and allow the investigation team to conduct a thorough examination without interference.

This somber event highlights the importance of safety measures around animals, especially those known for their strength and temperament.
