Today, the young royals demonstrated their support for the King by hosting a garden party in his absence.
The event was led by the Prince of Wales, marking his first appearance at Buckingham Palace this summer.
The gathering also featured his cousins Princess Beatrice, Princess Eugenie, Zara Tindall with her husband Mike, and Peter Philips. The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester were also in attendance.
Tradition of Royal Hosting
The monarch often delegates the responsibility of hosting one of the annual garden parties to family members or allows them to organize their own for charities they are closely associated with.
Last year, William also hosted such an event. With his father currently undergoing cancer treatment, William’s presence, along with the King’s nieces and nephew, is seen as a symbol of family solidarity during a challenging time.
Roles of Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie
Sources have clarified that the presence of Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie should not be interpreted as a sign that they will take on more public engagements or become part-time working royals.
Both princesses have careers and charitable interests outside of their royal duties, but they were always invited by their grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, to attend garden parties or larger receptions at Buckingham Palace.
This tradition is being continued by the King.
The King’s Schedule and Health
Despite undergoing treatment, King Charles, 75, maintains a busy schedule with public engagements almost every day of the week.
His wife, Queen Camilla, often urges him to slow down. Each engagement is carefully balanced to manage his health while fulfilling his duties.
Event Details and Guest Experience
Guests began arriving at 3 PM to enjoy the tea tents and palace grounds, despite the grey skies and rain.
Approximately 8,000 people were invited to the party, nominated by sponsors including Lord-Lieutenants, government departments, charities, the military, and faith groups.
The royal party arrived at 4 PM on the terrace via The Carnarvon Room, stood for the National Anthem, and then proceeded to the lawn.
They circulated through distinct lanes under the guidance of gentleman ushers to meet as many guests as possible.
William’s Engagements and Patronages
During the garden party, William met guests from various patronages and initiatives he and his wife support.
These included his Homewards initiative to combat homelessness, RAF Valley (where he worked as an RAF Search and Rescue pilot), Swim England, and tenants across the Duchy of Cornwall sites.
The inclusion of those connected to the Princess of Wales suggests that the initial planning for the garden party anticipated her attendance.
