The Shocking Moment in Punta Arenas
The incident took place off the coast of Punta Arenas, a city in southern Chile, where Adrian Simancas, 24, and his father, Dell, were kayaking together.
The two had set out for a peaceful day on the water, but their adventure quickly turned into a terrifying experience.
In a flash, a massive humpback whale breached the surface and appeared to engulf Adrian along with his inflatable kayak.
His father watched in horror as the whale’s gigantic mouth opened wide, and Adrian vanished from sight.
A Father’s Desperate Calls for Calm
In a frantic moment, Dell could be heard shouting instructions to his son, urging him to stay calm and hold onto his kayak rather than trying to climb back into it.
After a tense few seconds, Adrian miraculously reappeared, unscathed and with no need for medical attention.
Adrian, visibly shaken but unharmed, later shared his experience on a Chilean TV program.
He recalled, “I saw something blue and white passing close to my face… but before I could process what was happening, I sank.
I thought I had been eaten by the whale.”

Humpback whales, which can grow up to 50 feet long and weigh up to 36 tons, typically feed on small fish and krill by using bubbles to trap their prey.

Jooke Robbins, a leading expert on humpback whales, noted that these creatures feed by opening their mouths wide, sometimes obstructing their vision in the process.
She emphasized that incidents like this are exceedingly rare and likely accidental.
Despite the fears raised by this close call, Robbins reassured the public that there have been no known instances of humpback whales intentionally injuring swimmers or divers.
While the chances of a repeat incident remain incredibly slim, the remarkable survival of Adrian Simancas serves as a powerful reminder of the unpredictable nature of the ocean and the creatures that inhabit it.
