The gymnastics community is mourning after 19-year-old Indonesian gymnast Naufal Takdir Al Bari passed away in Russia.
He had been fighting for his life in intensive care for nearly two weeks following a devastating accident during training.
The Accident in Russia
Reports say the young athlete sustained a severe neck injury when he fell into a foam pit while practicing a horizontal bar routine.
The accident happened in Penza, Russia, where Naufal was preparing for upcoming major competitions.
Despite doctors’ efforts, his injuries proved too severe, and he died after 12 days in the hospital.
A Rising Star with Big Dreams
Naufal wasn’t just another athlete—he was a rising star with hopes of making history.
He had been preparing to represent Indonesia at the 2025 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in his home country, the 2025 SEA Games in Bangkok, and was even considered a strong contender for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
His death is a heartbreaking setback for Indonesian gymnastics and a huge personal loss for his family.
Official Statement from Indonesia
In a statement, the Indonesian Gymnastics Federation (IGF) expressed deep sorrow: “Gymnastics in Indonesia has lost one of its brightest talents.
Naufal’s passing is a heavy blow to us all.
May his family find strength during this time.”
The IGF also praised his dedication and talent, calling him one of the best the nation had to offer.
Russia Responds to the Tragedy
The Russian Gymnastics Federation confirmed that an investigation had been carried out into the incident.
Vice President Vasily Titov explained that Naufal was attempting a highly difficult routine he wasn’t fully prepared for, which led to the accident.
He added that Russia is ready to assist with the repatriation of Naufal’s body so his family can lay him to rest back home.
A Community in Mourning
Friends, teammates, and sports officials across Indonesia and beyond are paying tribute to the young gymnast whose career was cut short far too soon.
While his life ended tragically, his passion and dedication to gymnastics will remain an inspiration to those who knew him.
