Insecurity and Violence Loom: YIAGA Africa’s Pre-Election Statement

The election monitoring civil society organization, YIAGA Africa, has expressed deep concerns regarding the escalating levels of insecurity and violence in Imo, Kogi, and Bayelsa as the off-cycle governorship elections approach.

Abuse of Incumbency Powers

YIAGA Africa’s pre-election statement sheds light on the organization’s worries about the abuse of incumbency powers.

The manifestation of these concerns includes restrictions on campaigns, fines and levies imposed on campaign posters, and attacks on political opponents.

Fatalities and Impunity

The lack of accountability for the recorded fatalities and attacks during the pre-election period is a significant worry for the organization.

YIAGA Africa emphasizes that this lack of accountability contributes to a culture of impunity within the electoral process.

Call for Collaboration

YIAGA Africa calls for a collaborative effort between the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies.

The organization believes that the successful administration of a peaceful and transparent election is contingent on effective collaboration and coordination with institutions like INEC, the Nigerian Police, and other security agencies.

Security Analyst’s Revelations

In line with YIAGA Africa’s concerns, security analyst Kabir Adamu revealed that 133 violence cases have been recorded in Kogi, Imo, and Bayelsa ahead of the off-cycle governorship election. Imo and Kogi, in particular, have witnessed a higher number of violence cases.

Looking Ahead

As the off-cycle governorship election draws near, the spotlight remains on the need for concerted efforts to address the security challenges and ensure a fair and transparent electoral process.
