In a world where sustainability has become more urgent than ever, the need to spotlight meaningful, research-driven solutions is critical.
That’s exactly what the World Sustainability Award (WSA) aims to do—by celebrating the brilliant minds working across the globe to create a more sustainable future.
Offered by the MDPI Sustainability Foundation, this prestigious award honors researchers whose work is making a real impact—scientifically, socially, and economically.
A Total of $150,000 Up for Grabs in 2026
For its 2026 edition, the WSA will present three prizes worth $50,000 each, recognizing one individual in each of the core sustainability categories: Biosphere, Society, and Economy.
That’s a total prize pool of $150,000 going to those pushing the boundaries of sustainable research.
The winners will be formally recognized at the upcoming World Sustainability Forum 2026, an international event bringing together thought leaders, researchers, and innovators.
How to Nominate a Candidate
If you know a standout researcher whose work deserves global attention, nominations open on Friday, July 25, 2025.
Here’s what you need to know:
-
Only third-party nominations are allowed—self-nominations will not be accepted.
-
Submissions must be made through the official online platform.
-
Detailed nomination guidelines, including eligibility and submission rules, are outlined on the official award site.
Once nominations close, an esteemed Selection Committee made up of global sustainability experts will carefully review each candidate and choose the recipients.
Winners will be contacted directly and are expected to be present at the award ceremony during the World Sustainability Forum.
What the Committee Looks For
So, what makes a nominee stand out?
The WSA specifically honors senior researchers whose work demonstrates long-term excellence in sustainability scholarship.
The Selection Committee will evaluate based on these key criteria:
Scientific Excellence
Nominees must show a strong track record of top-tier research—either foundational or applied—across relevant disciplines or in interdisciplinary fields.
Contribution to Sustainability Pillars
The work should clearly impact at least two out of the three sustainability pillars:
-
Biosphere: Contributions to environmental and ecological systems
-
Society: Research that influences social or cultural development
-
Economy: Studies that enhance economic structures or foster innovation
Innovative, Real-World Solutions
Originality matters. The research should not only be innovative but also provide practical, implementable solutions to pressing sustainability issues.
Alignment with Global Goals
Does the work advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)? If so, that’s a major plus.
Leadership and Influence
The nominee should have a visible impact on the wider academic or professional landscape, including mentorship, institutional leadership, or other roles demonstrating thought leadership.
