Woolworths Metro IT system crashes, supermarket mayhem

Thousands of disgruntled after-work consumers have been thrown into disarray by a catastrophic IT system failure at the largest grocery company in Australia.

On Thursday afternoon, cashiers at thirty Woolworths Metro locations were unable to process customers’ grocery purchases, and several stores were forced to close as a result of the problems.

It was believed that the grocery chain’s point-of-sale systems were malfunctioning, preventing many customers from completing their purchases.

It was stated on social media that consumers at the chain’s Pyrmont location were unable to purchase anything and doors had to be locked.

Just after 4 p.m., reports of IT issues affecting Woolworths consumers began to circulate on social media.

‘Wow. Australia-wide outage of Woolworths’s IT systems. One man tweeted around 4:18 p.m., “You can’t purchase anything.” A Woolworths spokesperson verified the issue at Metro stores but stated that the majority of stores would not be affected.

The Woolworths official told Daily Mail Australia, “We are currently having an IT issue that affects checkouts in roughly 30 stores.”

We are working as rapidly as possible to remedy the issue. No difficulties exist with the Woolworths website. We apologize to our customers in the affected stores for the inconvenience and appreciate their patience while we address this IT issue.

A spokesperson for Woolworths stated that around 1,080 stores were unaffected and able to operate normally.
