In 2025, conversations around good governance in Nigeria are taking a meaningful turn—and data is at the heart of it.
The Women Environmental Programme (WEP), working alongside partners like Christian Aid, Action Aid, Hope Alive for Possibilities Initiative, and the Gender Advocacy Movement for the Environment (GAME), is taking a bold step to push for more inclusive leadership.
They’re launching a groundbreaking initiative called the GESI Performance Leaderboard, aimed at shining a light on how well Nigeria’s sub-national governments are doing when it comes to gender equality and social inclusion.
What Is the GESI Performance Leaderboard All About?
This leaderboard isn’t just another ranking system—it’s designed to evaluate how gender-responsive and inclusive governance structures are at the state level.
The goal is to promote fairness, better resource distribution, and ultimately make sure no one is left out of government decisions that affect their daily lives.
By recognizing and rewarding efforts toward inclusive policies, the leaderboard hopes to spark healthy competition among Nigeria’s 36 states and push leaders to do better when it comes to listening to all voices—especially those that are often unheard.
Who Is Needed and Why?
To make this vision a reality, WEP is looking to build a team of skilled individuals and organizations across Nigeria who can help gather the necessary data.
This includes tracking and reporting on gender equality and social inclusion (GESI) efforts in all 36 states.
If you or your organization has experience in this area—particularly in gathering data on gender or social development issues—this is your chance to be part of something impactful.
How You Can Get Involved
WEP is officially calling on experienced data collectors across Nigeria to express interest in joining the GESI Performance Leaderboard team.
This is a fantastic opportunity for civil society actors, researchers, local NGOs, and independent professionals passionate about equality to contribute to real change at the grassroots level.
There’s no specific deadline listed yet, but it’s best to act fast if you’re interested.
