The Democratic Alliance (DA) is seeking explanations following an alarming incident at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Phoenix, Durban, where a woman emerged alive from a freezer after being declared dead by doctors.
The 52-year-old Constantia Junior Govender, from Phoenix, claims that the incident occurred in early April.
This incident bears similarities to a previous case in 2016, when a motorcycle accident patient was discovered alive in a mortuary freezer at the same hospital, albeit succumbing to injuries hours later.
Demand for Transparency from the Provincial Health Department:
The DA’s spokesperson for Health in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), Edwin Baptie, has highlighted the importance of transparency in this matter.
The KZN Department of Health has initiated an investigation into the incident and is expected to respond officially to the allegations.
However, Baptie expresses concern that both Govender and the Department have not provided specific details such as the date, time, place, or names of staff members involved to substantiate their accounts.
Verification of Claims:
To ensure accountability, the DA in KZN has urged both the Health Department and Govender to provide precise information regarding the incident.
The DA believes that it is crucial to verify the claims made and calls upon MEC Simelane-Zulu to provide answers.
The party remains committed to seeking transparency and accountability from the ANC government, emphasizing that the citizens of KZN deserve proper healthcare.
The discovery of a woman alive in a freezer at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hospital has raised concerns, prompting the DA to demand transparency and verification of the incident.
The KZN Department of Health is currently investigating the matter and is expected to respond to the allegations.
By urging the department and Govender to provide specific details, the DA aims to ensure accountability and proper healthcare services for the people of KZN.
