Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Marshall Munetsi is making headlines for his picks in a dream five-a-side team, shining a spotlight on some of Zimbabwe’s finest football talents.
The 29-year-old, who recently moved to the English Premier League, included several former Kaizer Chiefs stars among his top choices.
From Orlando Pirates to Wolves
Munetsi’s journey has been impressive. He played for Orlando Pirates between 2017 and 2019 before making a move to France with Stade Reims, where he spent six successful seasons.
In February, he joined Wolves for a transfer fee of around €20 million.
Though he has only one assist in four matches so far, Munetsi remains focused on his development as Wolves battle at the bottom of the Premier League table.
Picking the Goalkeeper and Defenders
When asked about his ideal five-a-side squad, Munetsi immediately highlighted Zimbabwean talent.
For goalkeeper, he selected the late George Chigova, praising his commanding presence in the box and ability to play from the back.
“For defenders, it was a tough choice, but I’ll go with Norman Mapeza,” Munetsi said.
“He played for Galatasaray and was one of the best defenders our country has ever produced.”
Midfield Inspirations
Munetsi revealed that Kaizer Chiefs legend Tinashe Nengomasha has always been a personal inspiration.
“I really looked up to him, which is why I wear the number eight jersey for Zimbabwe,” he explained.
He also picked Peter Ndlovu, the first African to play in the Premier League, as well as Knowledge Musona, praising his goal-scoring ability and contributions to the national team over the years.
Adding Star Power with Former Chiefs Players
Rounding out his five-a-side dream team, Munetsi included another former Chiefs star, Khama Billiat, calling him one of Africa’s best players who has been a stalwart for Zimbabwe for many years.
“That’s why it’s so difficult to choose just five players,” Munetsi admitted.
“Honestly, I would prefer to pick eleven—it would be much easier to select a full team.”
A Nod to Zimbabwean Football Legacy
Munetsi’s selections underscore his respect for the legends who paved the way for Zimbabwean players in top leagues around the world.
From Chigova to Billiat, his dream team reflects a mix of skill, leadership, and inspiration drawn from his footballing roots.
