Will Smith is once again addressing the infamous Oscars slap incident in his latest album, Based on a True Story, which dropped this past Friday.
The superstar, who made headlines in March 2022 for slapping comedian Chris Rock during the 94th Academy Awards, has included references to the incident in his first solo album in two decades.
The Oscars Slap That Shook Hollywood
The slap occurred after Chris Rock made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved head, which didn’t sit well with Will Smith.
The incident, which was highly controversial, resulted in Smith receiving a ten-year ban from attending the Academy Awards.
Since that night, Smith and Rock have not communicated, although Rock has addressed the slap in his own comedy, dedicating a ten-minute segment in his Netflix stand-up special to the moment.
New Album Opens with Controversial Remarks
On Based on a True Story, Smith’s new album, the opening track, “Int.
Barbershop — Day,” features various voices criticizing him, saying things like, “Who the f–k does Will Smith think he is?” One of the voices even states, “Will Smith is canceled.”
Smith then drops a line reflecting on the slap, rapping, “I heard he won the Oscar, but he had to give it back / And you know they only made him do that shit because he’s black.”
The Feud Between Will Smith and Chris Rock Continues
The feud between the two seems far from over, as the song “You Lookin’ for Me?” continues the jab at Rock.
Will Smith’s inclusion of these references in his album shows that the tension between him and Rock is still alive, and he isn’t backing down.
