A routine hiking trip on Table Mountain almost turned into a serious emergency last weekend when three German tourists found themselves stranded as darkness and mist rolled in.
The group, aged between 22 and 24, had started their trek up the India Venster trail around 15:30, aiming to reach the Upper Cable Station of the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway.
Hikers Make the Smart Call
As evening approached, the hikers realized the final scramble onto Fountain Ledge would be too risky given the dropping temperatures and poor visibility.
Rather than pushing on, they did the responsible thing and called the local emergency number, (021) 937 0300, for help.
Preparedness Makes All the Difference
Luckily, the group had come prepared. They carried extra warm clothing, food, and water – supplies that proved crucial while they waited safely for the rescue teams to arrive.
Their foresight and careful planning likely prevented a far more serious situation.
Rescue Teams Battle Harsh Conditions
Wilderness Search And Rescue (WSAR) teams, working alongside SANParks rangers from Table Mountain National Park, faced strong winds and low visibility as they made their way to the hikers.
Despite the challenging conditions, the team successfully located the stranded tourists and guided them safely back down the mountain.
The rescue operation concluded at 00:27 on Saturday morning.
Safety First on Mountain Adventures
This incident serves as a reminder that mountain weather can change rapidly and that planning ahead is essential.
Hikers are advised to always check forecasts, carry essential supplies, and save the emergency contact number – (021) 937 0300 – before heading out.
