Money makes money, and some individuals have made an incredible amount of it over the years.
Bloomberg’s Billionaires Index is a daily ranking of the wealthiest individuals worldwide, and the figures are updated at the close of each trading day in New York.
The Richest People in the World
As of the close of business on April 17, 2023, Bernard Arnault, the chairman and CEO of LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton SE, is the wealthiest person in the world.
He overtook Elon Musk, the South African-born entrepreneur and CEO of SpaceX and Tesla Inc., for the top spot.
Following closely in third place is Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon and the owner of The Washington Post.
The Top 10 Richest People in the World
Aside from Arnault, Musk, and Bezos, the remaining seven people in the Top 10, in order, are: Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft Corporation and a philanthropist; Warren Buffett, the chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway; Larry Ellison, the founder of Oracle Corporation; Steve Ballmer, the owner of the Los Angeles Clippers and former CEO of Microsoft; Larry Page, a co-founder of Alphabet, Google’s parent company; Sergey Brin, the other co-founder of Alphabet; and Francoise Bettencourt Meyers, the granddaughter of L’Oréal SA’s founder and the richest woman in the world.
Commentary
The fact that these individuals have accumulated such enormous wealth is undoubtedly impressive, but it also highlights the vast disparity between the richest and poorest individuals in the world.
The amount of money that these individuals have is unfathomable to most people, and it raises questions about wealth inequality and the distribution of resources.
While some billionaires use their wealth for philanthropic purposes, others use it for their own gain, and the ethics of such accumulation of wealth are widely debated.
Nevertheless, the Bloomberg Billionaires Index provides an intriguing glimpse into the financial lives of the world’s wealthiest individuals.
