Manchester United’s struggles this season have become a talking point yet again, and this time it’s one of their greatest legends voicing his frustrations.
Wayne Rooney has admitted he has “no faith” in current manager Ruben Amorim and confessed that he barely recognises the club he once led to glory.
His comments came after United’s disappointing defeat against Brentford on Saturday.
United’s Rocky Start Under Amorim
The Red Devils have stumbled through the new campaign, managing only two Premier League wins—against newly promoted Burnley and a Chelsea side reduced to ten men.
To make matters worse, they were dumped out of the Carabao Cup at the first hurdle by League Two side Grimsby, a result that has piled even more pressure on Amorim.
Despite the poor form, the 40-year-old Portuguese coach has refused to budge from his tactical approach.
He even declared that “not even the Pope” could convince him to change his style.
But after a disastrous 15th-place finish last season and more than £200 million spent on new players over the summer, patience is wearing thin.
Rooney’s Candid Assessment
On The Wayne Rooney Show, the former captain didn’t hold back:
“It’s just not good enough—from the managers, the coaches, from the players. I don’t know what’s going on.”
Rooney admitted he had thought long and hard before speaking publicly, knowing the criticism would land heavily on Amorim.
Still, he felt compelled to be honest about his concerns for the club he loves.
“I Don’t Recognise the Club”
Rooney went further, questioning the identity and spirit of the current United side.
He said he doesn’t see fight, character, or match-winners in the squad anymore, adding:
“I go to watch the team and think, ‘here we go again—we’re going to lose, or maybe nick a point’. This is not Man United.”
The ex-striker also shared that he worries the club’s soul is disappearing, with long-serving staff members being dismissed after decades of service. In his words, “It needs a new engine, a new lease of life.”
Responsibility Beyond the Manager
While Rooney was clear about his lack of belief in Amorim, he didn’t place all the blame at the manager’s feet.
He accused some players of not deserving to wear the shirt and urged United’s owners—whether the Glazers or Sir Jim Ratcliffe—to finally provide a clear message about the direction of the club.
“Man United haven’t won back-to-back games since January,” he reminded.
“At the moment, we’re all just waiting for it to crumble.”
Amorim Stands His Ground
Despite the criticism and growing doubts from fans and pundits, Amorim insisted he is not worried about his position.
Speaking after the Brentford loss, he said he remains confident in his methods:
“I am always comfortable with the job. I am never concerned about my job, I am not that kind of guy.”
He argued that building momentum takes time and stressed that he knows how to handle setbacks, pointing out that football always brings highs and lows.
Ratcliffe Still Backs the Manager
For now, Amorim has the backing of United’s new powerbroker.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who invested heavily in the squad with more than £214 million spent in the summer transfer window, still believes the manager needs more time to make his system work.
But with results continuing to falter and icons like Rooney losing faith, the pressure is only set to intensify at Old Trafford.
