Wales prepare for tense World Cup play-off battle as Craig Bellamy’s side face Bosnia at home in Cardiff

Wales are gearing up for a high-stakes run to next summer’s World Cup, starting with a home clash against Bosnia and Herzegovina in the play-off semi-finals.

Despite being ranked 39 places above their opponents, Wales have a tricky history, failing to beat Bosnia in their last four meetings.

Manager Craig Bellamy and his squad will be hoping that home advantage and history can tip the scales in their favour.

A Potential Showdown With Italy or Northern Ireland

If Wales overcome Bosnia, they will face the winner of Italy vs Northern Ireland, setting up what promises to be a captivating play-off final.

Italy, ranked 12th in the world, are the highest-ranked side in the draw and are desperate to avoid missing a third straight World Cup.

With four World Cup titles under their belt, the Azzurri remain a formidable challenge, even in a play-off scenario.

On the other hand, Northern Ireland could provide an emotionally charged alternative.

The Irish side secured their play-off spot through Nations League performances, and a Welsh derby would certainly be intense.

Home Advantage Could Be Key

There’s a silver lining for Wales: should they navigate past Bosnia, they will host the play-off final at home.

Cardiff has been a happy hunting ground in the past, including Bellamy’s iconic winner against Italy in 2002.

The hope is that history can once again lend them an edge.

Ireland and Other Play-Off Paths

Meanwhile, Republic of Ireland are drawn away to Czech Republic in their semi-final.

Their journey to the play-offs was dramatic, with Troy Parrott scoring a 96th-minute winner in Hungary to seal a spot.

If they succeed, Ireland will host the final against the winner of Denmark vs North Macedonia, giving them a potential home advantage similar to Wales.

The Czech Republic, however, rank 15 places above Ireland, making the trip to Prague a tough challenge, despite the energy and enthusiasm from Irish fans in recent days.

Other Notable Play-Offs

Sweden, managed by Graham Potter, will travel to Ukraine before hosting a potential final against Poland or Albania.

Denmark also remain a potential obstacle for Ireland, given their 5-1 victory in a 2017 play-off final, adding historical weight to the matchups.

Dates and Tournament Expansion

The semi-finals are scheduled for Thursday, 26 March 2026, with the finals following five days later on Tuesday, 31 March.

Kick-off times are yet to be confirmed.

The upcoming tournament will be historic: the first to feature 48 teams (expanded from 32) and the first hosted across three countries.

The USA will stage 78 games, while Mexico and Canada will host 13 each.

The full World Cup draw will take place at 5pm on 5 December 2025.
