Waitrose staff and customers left in shock as woman in her 40s dies inside Esher supermarket despite urgent medical response from paramedics

What started as an ordinary Wednesday evening in Esher took a heartbreaking turn when emergency services rushed to Waitrose after reports of a woman in distress.

The incident, which happened shortly after 6pm on August 20, led to the temporary closure of both the supermarket and part of the high street.

Emergency Response on the Scene

Paramedics and police officers were quickly on site, supported by the Air Ambulance Charity Kent, Surrey, Sussex.

Despite their urgent efforts, the woman—believed to be in her 40s—sadly passed away at the scene. Surrey Police later confirmed that her next of kin have been informed.

The Supermarket and High Street Closure

As emergency teams carried out their work, the Waitrose store and the surrounding area were sealed off to the public.

For several hours, Esher High Street witnessed a heavy presence of police vehicles and medical crews, which naturally caused concern among residents and shoppers.

The supermarket has since reopened.

Official Police Statement

A Surrey Police spokesperson explained that officers were called to the supermarket by the South East Coast Ambulance Service following reports of a medical emergency.

They confirmed the woman’s death and acknowledged the significant joint response from multiple emergency services.

Waitrose Shares Their Sympathy

In a message of condolence, Waitrose expressed sorrow over the tragic event.

A spokesperson said the company’s “thoughts are with our customer’s family and loved ones,” adding that their staff acted quickly to provide support while waiting for paramedics.

They also confirmed efforts are being made to ensure employees and customers who were present receive the support they need.

The sudden loss has left the Esher community shaken.

What should have been a routine shopping trip ended in tragedy, reminding locals of how fragile life can be.

For many, the presence of ambulances and the air ambulance in the heart of the high street will not be forgotten anytime soon.
