Herman Mashaba, the leader of ActionSA, said that Vytjie Mentor, a former senior ANC legislator, passed away on Tuesday morning after a prolonged illness. She was aged 58 years.

“Vitji had been ill for some time and her family called us this morning to inform us that she had died of her illness after being hospitalized for several months,” he said in a statement.

The teacher was one of the first politicians to appear during the state capture investigation, where she detailed how former president Jacob Zuma reportedly attempted to recruit her as a compliant minister via the Gupta family. However, she provided opposing testimony before the Investigation Commission.

She was a member of the ANC and chaired the committee on state businesses. After leaving ACDP to become the Western Cape chair of the organization, Mentor joined ActionSA almost two years ago.

Mashaba said: “She was a true patriot who served her country despite criticism.”
