Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala appears under heavy police guard in Alexandra and is refused bail amid serious allegations of plotting ex-girlfriend’s murder

Controversial businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala will remain behind bars after the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court denied him bail on Wednesday, 17 September.

Matlala appeared under heavy police guard, facing a slew of serious charges, including orchestrating the attempted murder of his ex-girlfriend, Tebogo Thobejane, in 2023, as well as conspiracy to commit murder and money laundering.

Magistrate Syta Prinsloo ruled against his bail application, citing concerns over the risk Matlala might evade justice.

The state highlighted Matlala’s alleged past use of fake identity documents to travel to Eswatini, with no records indicating he returned to South Africa, reinforcing fears that he could flee the country again.

Court Appearance Coincides With Madlanga Commission

Matlala’s court appearance coincided with the opening of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into Criminality, Political Interference, and Corruption in the Criminal Justice System, widely known as the Madlanga Commission.

The timing added extra tension, as the commission probes allegations of high-level corruption and interference in South Africa’s criminal justice system.

KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, who is testifying before the commission, accused Matlala of having close connections with senior officials in the South African Police Service (SAPS).

The businessman is also alleged to have colluded with suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, raising concerns over undue influence and corruption.

Flight Risk and Serious Allegations

The denial of bail underscores the severity of the charges Matlala faces and the perceived risk he poses to the judicial process.

With multiple serious accusations hanging over him, the court deemed it unsafe to allow him back into the community while the case proceeds.

As the Madlanga Commission continues its work, Matlala’s name is likely to remain in the spotlight, with further revelations expected to emerge about his alleged dealings and political connections.
