Vatican City reflects on the enduring legacy of Pope John Paul II as the 20th anniversary of his death approaches this April

It has been two decades since Pope John Paul II passed away, yet his presence still lingers in the hearts of millions.

Whether through his teachings, his unwavering faith, or his impact on world events, his legacy continues to inspire people worldwide.

For those who visit his tomb in St. Peter’s Basilica, it’s not just about paying respects to a past pope—it’s about connecting with a leader who still feels very much alive in spirit.

One of the people who knew him best, Cardinal Stanisław Dziwisz, his personal secretary for almost four decades, shared his thoughts in a recent interview in Krakow.

“People don’t visit a dead pope,” he said. “They visit a pope who lives in their hearts and memories.”

The Words That Changed a Nation—and the World

John Paul II wasn’t just a religious leader; he was a force of change.

Archbishop Thomas Wenski of Miami, whose parents were Polish, believes the world as we know it was shaped in part by John Paul II’s courage and leadership.

“When he visited Poland in 1979, he told the people, ‘Be not afraid,’” Wenski recalled.

“He called upon the Holy Spirit to transform the land, and that moment helped to set the stage for the fall of communism.”

Dziwisz echoed these sentiments, pointing out that John Paul II’s vision extended far beyond Poland.

At a time when Marxism seemed to dominate political thought, the pope stood firm in his belief that the future belonged not to ideology, but to human dignity, freedom, and faith.

A Farewell Filled with Love and Devotion

The final days of Pope John Paul II’s life were marked by an outpouring of love from people around the world.

His passing on April 2, 2005, was not just a moment of mourning—it was a time of deep reflection and unity for those who had followed his journey.

Dziwisz recalled the powerful emotions that filled the room in those final hours.

“People came to say goodbye, many with tears in their eyes, kissing his hand, expressing their love,” he remembered.

Even in his last moments, John Paul II remained deeply connected to his faith.

In the hours before his passing, he requested that the Gospel of St. John be read aloud to him.

“He listened in silence, fully aware, preparing himself for his journey home,” Dziwisz said.

To ensure he felt the love and support of those outside, the windows of his apartment were discreetly opened so he could hear the voices of the thousands keeping vigil in St. Peter’s Square.

When a group of young people was told they could go home, their response was simple: “He was with us, so now we want to be with him.”

A Leader Who Refused to Give Up

Throughout his life, John Paul II embodied resilience. Umberto Civitarese, a veteran Vatican Radio journalist who covered the pope’s many travels, remembers his determination to stay present despite his failing health.

“Even when he couldn’t speak, he would appear at the window during the Angelus. Just seeing him was enough for the people.”

Dziwisz confirmed that John Paul II remained mentally sharp until his final moments.

“He never complained about his suffering,” he said. “He always believed that suffering had meaning.”

A Saint in the Making

For those who worked closely with him, there was never any doubt about John Paul II’s holiness.

“Early on, many of us had the feeling we were witnessing a saint in action,” Civitarese reflected.

John Paul II’s faith wasn’t just something he preached—it was how he lived.

Even after long days of travel and meetings, he always made time for prayer.

“While others rested, he went straight to the chapel,” Civitarese recalled. “His connection with God came first.”

It was this unwavering dedication that left a lasting impact on those who knew him.

“When you are in the presence of a figure like that, it changes your life,” he said.

A Lasting Presence

Even 20 years after his passing, Pope John Paul II’s influence continues to be felt.

His teachings, his courage, and his deep faith serve as a beacon of hope for many.

Whether through his powerful words, his presence in historical moments, or the faith he instilled in millions, his legacy is far from fading.

“He is still with us,” Dziwisz said simply. And for those who continue to be inspired by him, that statement couldn’t be more true.
