United Airlines unveils Relax Row seats transforming economy rows into sofas on long-haul flights

United Airlines is set to revolutionize long-haul flying with a bold new seating option designed for families, friends, and couples who want more space.

The airline has unveiled the United Relax RowSM, a unique economy seat configuration that transforms an entire row into a flat, shared sofa complete with pillows and blankets.

This innovation promises a more comfortable and social experience in the skies.


How the United Relax Row Works

Each United Relax Row consists of three adjacent economy seats.

The leg rests can be flipped up at a 90-degree angle to create a continuous flat surface.

Passengers receive a custom-fitted mattress pad, a plush blanket, and two extra pillows.

Families traveling with children will also get a soft plush toy and a Children’s Travel Kit, making the experience both cozy and practical.

Safety hasn’t been overlooked. The seats come with larger seatbelts and can be used in “couch mode” at any altitude above 10,000 feet.

Positioned between Economy Plus and standard Economy cabins, up to 12 Relax Rows will be installed on each aircraft.

The first United Relax Rows are scheduled to debut in 2027.

By 2030, over 200 Boeing 787 and 777 widebody aircraft are expected to feature this new seating arrangement.

Unlike United’s Relax Row, the Kestrel focuses on maximizing personal legroom, offering two extra inches of space for knees and shins.

The new easyJet seat is thinner than conventional seats, thanks to carbon fiber construction, and features a 22-degree fixed recline designed to maximize comfort while preventing passengers from reclining into the space of the person behind them.

The new seats will be installed on Airbus A320neo and A321neo planes, but not retrofitted on the current 350-plane fleet due to cost considerations.
