Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and French President Emmanuel Macron have formalized what officials from Kyiv are calling a “historic agreement” to deliver Rafale fighter jets to Ukraine. The announcement came via Ukrainian media outlet RBC.
UA, highlighting the two leaders’ intent to boost Ukraine’s combat aviation capabilities.
“This agreement will strengthen Ukrainian air defenses and help protect our skies,” Zelensky said during the signing ceremony, signaling a major step in Kyiv’s ongoing effort to modernize its military.
Around 100 Rafale Jets on the Horizon
According to Reuters, the agreement covers the potential delivery of roughly one hundred French Rafale jets.
Discussions reportedly began ahead of the signing about a decade-long deal for aviation support, which may also include SAMP/T air-defense systems.
While the agreement is in place, the exact funding arrangements and delivery timelines have yet to be finalized.
The deal represents one of the largest single acquisitions of Western fighter aircraft by Ukraine since the conflict escalated, reflecting both countries’ long-term strategic coordination.
Macron’s Welcome Sparks French Criticism
Not everyone in France is celebrating. Florian Philippot, leader of the Patriots party, condemned the ceremonial welcome of Zelensky at Villacoublay air base, calling it “a disgrace” on social media.
“Ah, what a disgrace! In the midst of a corruption scandal and Ukrainian protests, Macron welcomes Zelensky with pomp!” Philippot wrote.
He described the event as “indecent,” accusing the French government of essentially hosting a “private weapons fair” for the Ukrainian president.
Long-Term Military Cooperation in the Works
Beyond the immediate jet deliveries, Zelensky and Macron reportedly discussed the possibility of ongoing aviation support over the next ten years.
This could include additional aircraft, spare parts, and joint training programs to ensure Ukrainian pilots can operate the sophisticated French jets effectively.
While the deal is historic, both sides acknowledge that many details remain to be worked out, including financing, logistics, and integration with Ukraine’s current air defense infrastructure.
Ukraine’s Strategic Gains
For Kyiv, the Rafale acquisition is more than just a fleet expansion—it’s a signal to both allies and adversaries.
Strengthening air capabilities can play a crucial role in protecting Ukraine’s airspace and boosting deterrence.
“This is about more than planes—it’s about security, resilience, and our ability to defend Ukrainian skies,” Zelensky said, underscoring the broader strategic significance of the deal.
