UAE could set standard for food production in a harsh climate: Dutch official

DUBAI, 25th February, 2022 – The UAE could set the standard for food production in a harsh climate, with economically feasible solutions that are driven by renewable energy and reusable wastewater, creating new ecosystems around the many ways of producing and processing food, according to a Dutch official.

“We need to create an opportunity to make food production attractive again for the next generation.

Young professionals that choose to live close to, or in, urban areas.

Where they can develop a new economy around food production in which circularity and new technology will play a big role,” said Meiny Prins, Expo Ambassador for the Netherlands Pavilion at the Expo 2020 Dubai.

She was speaking during the Horticultural Days, an event organised at the Netherlands Pavilion at Expo Dubai 2020 this week.

“Food security is a key topic that needs to be addressed worldwide, not just in the Gulf region.

Food security can only be achieved through a strong partnership between governments, businesses, research institutions, and citizens.

We need to show how collaboration between them is vital for constant evolution and continuous innovations.

Together, we can make significant steps towards more sustainable food production worldwide,” Prins explained.

Erik Smidt, Netherlands’ Agricultural Counsellor assigned to Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman & Bahrain, said The Netherlands Pavilion is a great platform for connection, which showcases sustainable solutions that reflect its theme of uniting water, energy and food.
