Sometimes a change of scenery is exactly what a player needs—and for Liverpool’s Tyler Morton, that time seems to have arrived.
The 22-year-old midfielder is on the brink of finalizing a move to French side Lyon, with the deal expected to be worth up to £15 million.
Searching for Game Time and a Bigger Role
After coming through the ranks at Liverpool’s academy, Morton has spent recent seasons trying to carve out a regular place in the senior team.
But with limited minutes and stiff competition for places at Anfield, the England U21 international has been open to offers that promise more consistent first-team action.
Clubs across Europe have taken notice. Interest has poured in from the likes of West Ham, Ajax, Sporting Braga, and Strasbourg—but it’s Lyon who appear to have made the decisive move.
Sources say they’ve now reached a provisional agreement with Liverpool, meeting the club’s valuation and getting close to sealing the transfer.
From Hull Loan to Limited Action at Liverpool
Morton spent the 2023–24 season on loan at Hull City in the Championship, where he gained valuable match experience.
But despite returning to Liverpool last season full of hope, he only made six appearances across all competitions under new boss Arne Slot.
Even though Slot led the Reds to a Premier League title in his first season in charge, opportunities were few and far between for Morton—making the prospect of a move abroad all the more appealing.
Darwin Nunez Still Attracting Big-Money Attention
Meanwhile, another Liverpool player generating interest is Darwin Nunez.
The Uruguayan striker has caught the eye of Saudi giants Al Hilal, who are reportedly still considering a move.
Liverpool have stood firm on their asking price of £70 million.
They previously turned down offers from Al Nassr in February and more recently from Serie A side Napoli.
Newcastle have also shown some interest in Nunez, though he’s not currently top of their priority list.
As of now, Liverpool haven’t made a move for Newcastle’s Alexander Isak, who has been loosely linked as a potential replacement.
Academy Changes Behind the Scenes
Off the pitch, Liverpool have made a notable addition to their coaching setup.
Former Manchester United staff member Simon Wiles has been appointed as the new U18s coach at the club’s academy.
Wiles brings plenty of youth development experience with him and will now help shape the next generation of talent coming through the Liverpool system.
