Two injured as speeding car plough into crowd during illegal street race

During an alleged illegal street race, two vehicles clashed at high speeds before one of them left the road and ploughed into a gathering of witnesses. This incident occurred in Springfield Park.
The tragedy happened just before midnight on Saturday evening, according to Emer-G-Med spokeswoman Kyle van Reenen.
“Just before midnight, paramedics and Netcare911 were dispatched to the crossroads of Umgeni Road and Intersite Avenue to reports of a significant motor vehicle collision,” he said.

TWO VEHICLES HAD COLLIDED AT HIGH SPEED

On arrival on the scene, paramedics found two vehicles that collided at ‘high speed and high impact’.
“One of the vehicles left the roadway and ploughed into a crowd of people.”
He said two people were left injured, one critically.

TWO PEOPLE WERE INJURED IN THE ACCIDENT

They were treated and stabilized on the scene before being taken to a nearby hospital for further care.
“It is alleged that the incident is related to illegal Street racing activities in the area; however, this is speculative and will form the subject of a South African Police Services investigation.”
This area is allegedly known for illegal street racing activities. In 2019 the eThekwini metro police swooped on a crowd at an illegal weekend drag-racing event in Springfield Park.

SPRINGFIELD KNOWN FOR ILLEGAL STREET RACING

They issued 58 fines for infringements ranging from unroadworthy and unlicensed vehicles to driving without a licence.
According to a report by IOL eThekwini metro police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Parboo Sewpersad said the police issued the fines in less than an hour during “operation disruption” along the M19 and Umgeni Road in Springfield Park.
He said a large crowd and some 200 vehicles had gathered at midnight.
