Tulip Siddiq, the Labour Party’s anti-corruption minister, has come under intense scrutiny amid claims that her use of properties linked to her aunt, the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, is under investigation.
The Hampstead and Highgate MP is reportedly being probed by a watchdog over her connection to two properties in London—one in Hampstead and another in King’s Cross.
Both properties were allegedly linked to associates of the Awami League, the political party led by her aunt.
These developments have raised questions about Siddiq’s role in a 2013 deal with Russia concerning a nuclear power plant in Bangladesh, with accusations of embezzlement tied to the deal.
Despite the ongoing investigations and media reports, Siddiq maintains her innocence, claiming that she has acted appropriately.
She recently referred herself to Sir Laurie Magnus, the Prime Minister’s independent adviser on ministerial standards, to ensure that an investigation is carried out.
In her letter, Siddiq made it clear that she believed she had done nothing wrong and sought an independent review to clear her name.
Support from Keir Starmer and Pat McFadden
Sir Keir Starmer, leader of the Labour Party, has expressed full confidence in Siddiq, asserting that she has handled the situation properly by referring herself for investigation.
At a recent press conference, Starmer emphasized that he believes Siddiq acted transparently and with integrity.
Pat McFadden, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, also voiced his unwavering support for Siddiq.
In an interview, McFadden was asked if he had full confidence in her, to which he responded affirmatively.
He further explained that the government had strengthened the powers of the independent adviser to handle such allegations and investigations.
McFadden argued that this was the proper course of action and that the investigation should be allowed to proceed independently.
Opposition Calls for Siddiq’s Removal
However, not all members of the political spectrum share the same view.
Some, including prominent Conservative figures, are calling for Siddiq’s resignation or removal from her position as economic secretary to the Treasury.
Shadow Chancellor Mel Stride stated that Siddiq should not continue in her role while these allegations hang over her.
Stride urged Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to take decisive action.
The controversy intensified when the Sunday Times published further claims about properties connected to Siddiq and her family.
Muhammad Yunus, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate and leader of Bangladesh’s interim government, has also weighed in, calling for the return of the properties if they were acquired through illegal means.
Tulip Siddiq’s Response and the Ongoing Investigation
In response to the mounting pressure, Siddiq reiterated her stance that the allegations were unfounded.
In her letter to Sir Laurie Magnus, she stated that much of the media reporting on her financial affairs had been inaccurate.
Siddiq’s supporters have dismissed the claims as “spurious,” asserting that she has nothing to hide.
Despite the backlash, Siddiq remains committed to cooperating with the investigation.
She even withdrew from a recent trip to China with Chancellor Rachel Reeves to ensure she would be available to assist Sir Laurie Magnus with his inquiry.
Siddiq continues to maintain that the facts will clear her name, and she is prepared to provide any necessary information to facilitate the investigation.
As the inquiry unfolds, both political allies and critics await the outcome, with the potential for significant consequences depending on the findings.
