US President Donald Trump made headlines on Thursday, describing a full-scale invasion of Iran as “a waste of time,” while suggesting the country needs a new leader capable of “cleaning out everything.”

Speaking to NBC News, Trump outlined a vision for regime change without committing to direct military occupation.

“We want them to have a good leader,” Trump said, adding that he has potential candidates in mind but declined to name anyone.

He also joked that Iran might eventually consult him on who should succeed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who recently passed away.

Iran’s Succession Debate Intensifies

Following Khamenei’s death, Iran’s interim council is convening the Assembly of Experts to select a new supreme leader.

Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of the late Ayatollah, is currently the frontrunner.

Despite his military background and influence within the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), he has never held formal office or high clerical rank.

Israel, however, has publicly threatened Mojtaba, heightening tensions.

Trump hinted at his involvement in selecting Iran’s next leader, stating that Mojtaba was “unlikely” to be his choice.

Escalating US-Iran Tensions

The day’s interviews came as Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned that any US ground invasion would be “a disaster” for the United States.

Trump dismissed this warning, calling it “a wasted comment,” and emphasized that Iran has already suffered significant military losses.

Earlier on Thursday, Trump issued a stern warning to Iranian forces: surrender or face “guaranteed death.”

He offered members of the IRGC total immunity if they laid down their arms and positioned themselves with the Iranian people instead.

Iran Strikes Gulf Allies

In retaliation for US and Israeli operations, Iran launched its most intense attacks yet on Israel and Gulf allies.

Cruise missiles and hundreds of drones struck targets in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, leaving smoke over Riyadh and Abu Dhabi and injuring six civilians.

Missiles also hit Bahrain’s largest petroleum refinery and caused damage in Qatar and Kuwait.

Azerbaijan was drawn into the conflict when Iranian-made drones struck near its border, injuring civilians and damaging airport infrastructure.

US and Israeli Military Response

Trump claimed that US forces, in coordination with Israeli partners, have significantly weakened Iran’s navy and air capabilities, including destroying 24 ships in three days.

Israel’s military confirmed it was moving to the next phase of operations to dismantle the regime and its military infrastructure.

Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, IDF Chief of Staff, described Iran as strategically isolated and at an unprecedented point of vulnerability.

Meanwhile, US commentators criticized allies, including the UK, for initially restricting access to bases that could support operations.

Recent Naval Engagements

The conflict escalated further after a US submarine sank the Iranian warship Iris Dena off Sri Lanka, killing at least 87 sailors.

Iranian officials condemned the attack as an “atrocity at sea,” while Sri Lanka evacuated another vessel to prevent further losses.

The IRGC also attempted to strike the largest US military base in the Middle East, al-Udeid Air Base, using Su-24 bombers, which were intercepted by Qatari F-15 jets just minutes from impact.

Impact and Consequences

The ongoing conflict has destabilized the Middle East, drawing multiple countries into direct military action.

Key oil infrastructure has been damaged, raising global energy concerns, while civilian casualties and infrastructure destruction continue to mount.

The heightened tensions risk further escalation, potentially involving more regional and global powers.

What’s Next?

The immediate future hinges on diplomatic and military maneuvering.

Trump suggested Iran is seeking negotiations, but he maintained that the US is prepared to intensify its operations.

Israel and the US will likely continue joint strikes, while Iran may pursue retaliatory attacks, further entangling regional allies.

Summary

Donald Trump has dismissed a ground invasion of Iran but signaled support for leadership change.

Iran has retaliated with missile and drone attacks across the Gulf, drawing in multiple nations.

The US and Israel continue coordinated strikes, aiming to degrade Iran’s military and political infrastructure.
