A devastating tornado tore through northern Tennessee on Thursday night, leaving behind destruction and heartbreak.
Among the victims were a 45-year-old mother and her 22-year-old daughter, who tragically lost their lives when the storm struck their home in Deer Lodge.
Mother and Daughter Taken Too Soon
Wendy Smith and her daughter, Felicia Williams, were inside their home when the powerful tornado swept through their town.
Their family confirmed the heartbreaking news on Friday, sharing that both women had perished in the disaster.
Felicia, who was on the verge of completing her Medical Assistant program, had a bright future ahead of her.
A GoFundMe has been set up to help cover funeral expenses and rebuild their home, which was completely destroyed in the storm.
Widespread Devastation and Injuries
The tornado, which struck just before 8:30 PM, left behind not only destruction but also injuries.
Officials reported three people were hurt, though details about their conditions remain unclear.
The community has come together to support those affected by the storm’s aftermath.
Heartfelt Tributes Pour In
Friends and loved ones of Wendy and Felicia have expressed their grief on social media.
Timothy Luketich shared a heartfelt post on X, revealing the deep impact of their loss: “My wife, from Morgan County, is steadily getting updates from her family hit by the tornadoes.
She’s already lost her cousin, not sure about her cousin’s daughter, and sounds like there may be more.”
Sandy Chambers, another mourner, replied: “Praying for your wife and family.
I think I know your wife’s cousin.
If it’s the same person, she is married to my nephew.
Please hug her for me. Two of the sweetest humans I’ve ever known. Just pure goodness in both of them.”
Emergency Response Efforts Underway
The tornado severely impacted Morgan County, particularly the Deer Lodge and Sunbright areas.
According to Morgan County Emergency Management spokesperson Aaron Evans, over 100 emergency personnel have been deployed to assist with search and rescue efforts.
The storm left many homes and roads damaged, with trees and debris scattered across the area.
By Friday morning, nearly eight percent of Morgan County was without power, according to PowerOutage.us.
Statewide Support and Safety Measures
Authorities are working tirelessly to ensure residents’ safety and assess structural damage.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol has dispatched troopers to the affected areas to help with recovery efforts.
Governor Bill Lee expressed his condolences and pledged his support for the victims and their families.
“Please join Maria and me in lifting our neighboring Tennesseans up in prayer as response teams help survivors,” he shared on social media.
He also announced plans to visit the rural community later in the day.
Schools Closed Amid Recovery Efforts
Due to the significant damage caused by the tornado, the Morgan County School District announced school closures for Friday.
The district’s website cited the widespread destruction as the reason for the temporary shutdown.
An Emergency Operations Center has been established, and additional relief efforts are being coordinated at Wartburg Central High School.
Tennessee Emergency Management has assured the community that all available resources are being mobilized to assist those affected.
Community Rallies Together
The people of Morgan County are coming together to support one another in the wake of this devastating event.
Officials continue to urge residents to remain vigilant and seek shelter if necessary, as storms remain a potential threat.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of those affected by this tragic event,” Tennessee Emergency Management stated.
“The Morgan County Emergency Management Agency is working closely with local, state, and federal agencies to respond to this event and provide support to those affected.”
As recovery efforts continue, the community mourns the loss of Wendy and Felicia, two lives taken far too soon by nature’s fury.
