A devastating accident has left a teenage boy dead after the car he was in plunged into a sewage treatment pit.
Authorities have arrested two individuals in connection with the incident, which occurred early Sunday morning.
The Accident and Rescue Efforts
Around 6:20 a.m., emergency services received reports of a vehicle crash at the Wheldale Sewage Works in Castleford, West Yorkshire.
Firefighters and water rescue teams quickly arrived at the scene in freezing conditions to find the car, a white Volkswagen Golf, mostly submerged in a wastewater tank.
The body of an 18-year-old male was discovered nearby, and despite rescue efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Survivors and Arrests
The two other people in the car, a 21-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman, were rescued from the submerged vehicle.
They were both taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Following the incident, the pair were arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
Ongoing Investigation and Public Appeal
Police have launched an investigation into the accident, with the Major Collision Enquiry Team now handling the case.
They are urging anyone who may have witnessed the car traveling on Wheldon Road, particularly from the Airedale direction, to come forward.
Authorities are also requesting any footage that could aid in their investigation.
