What was supposed to be a fun, carefree summer day at Hersheypark turned devastating for one Pennsylvania family.

A 9-year-old girl, later identified as Sophia Subedi, tragically lost her life in the park’s popular wave pool.

The incident unfolded last Thursday during a hot 92-degree evening, leaving the community in shock and mourning.

Young Girl Pulled Unresponsive from Wave Pool

Sophia was enjoying the water at the crowded Hersheypark wave pool when something went terribly wrong.

Witnesses say she was in visible distress before lifeguards rushed to her aid. She was pulled from the pool limp and unresponsive.

Lifeguards immediately began CPR, working with urgency and focus on a poolside gurney as stunned families watched in horror.

Despite their efforts, Sophia could not be revived.

Community Mourns the Loss of a Bright Light

On Monday, the Bhutanese Community in Harrisburg (BCH) confirmed Sophia’s identity and shared a heartfelt tribute.

“A bright, kind, and loving young girl, Sophia brought joy and light to everyone who knew her,” the organization said.

“Her sudden loss has left our entire community in grief.”

Sophia was born in Columbus, Ohio, and moved to Harrisburg with her family in 2022.

She had just finished third grade at North Side Elementary School in the Central Dauphin School District.

Remembering Sophia’s Big Dreams and Gentle Spirit

Friends and family are now remembering Sophia not just for her academic brilliance, but also for her warmth and compassion.

A GoFundMe page set up in her memory shares touching details about her personality and dreams.

Organizer Sri Adhikari said Sophia had hoped to become a teacher one day.

“She loved dancing in the living room with her little cousins, holding her mom’s hand on evening walks, and singing along to her favorite Nepali songs during car rides,” Adhikari wrote.

“Those who knew her remember her not just for her curiosity, but for her deeply caring heart.”

So far, the fundraiser has gathered over $3,000 to support her grieving family during this incredibly painful time.

Questions Remain About What Went Wrong

At this point, the exact cause of Sophia’s death hasn’t been confirmed. An autopsy has been scheduled, but results have not yet been released.

Hersheypark has stated that there were more than 100 certified lifeguards working that day, with 10 assigned specifically to the wave pool area.

Still, the tragic circumstances have raised questions and concerns among parkgoers and the local community.

Hersheypark Responds with Condolences

In response to the incident, Hershey Entertainment & Resorts CEO John Lawn issued a public statement.

“Our hearts break for this child and the child’s family.

We extend our deepest condolences for their loss,” he said.

The theme park has not released further details pending the investigation, but they’ve reiterated their commitment to safety and support during this difficult time.

A Final Goodbye Set for Wednesday

Sophia’s funeral is scheduled for Wednesday in Harrisburg, where family, friends, and community members will gather to honor her memory.

As the investigation continues, one thing is certain—Sophia’s spirit has left a lasting impact on everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.
