Tottenham Hotspur has endured a season to forget, with injuries wreaking havoc on their squad and pushing them down to 14th place in the Premier League.
Amid their struggles, questions have been raised about whether James Maddison’s return could make a real difference for Ange Postecoglou’s side.
Roy Keane Questions Maddison’s Impact
Football pundit Roy Keane isn’t convinced.
Speaking on the latest episode of Stick to Football, presented by Sky Bet, the former Manchester United captain suggested Maddison’s absence isn’t a major setback for Spurs.
Keane dismissed the idea that Maddison’s return would be a game-changer, stating, “Which players are we talking about coming back that can actually help Spurs?
Sure, [Micky van de Ven, Guglielmo Vicario] – those two matter.
[Destiny] Udogie isn’t bad either.
But Maddison? We saw him at Tamworth and he got taken off! That’s a non-league side.
People say, ‘Maddison is the man,’ but when is he actually going to step up?”
The outspoken pundit also pointed out Maddison’s track record, noting that he was relegated with Leicester City and suggesting Spurs’ current form isn’t far off from a similar fate.
“He’s got talent, no doubt. But if you’re in that Spurs dressing room and he walks back in, you’re not thinking, ‘James is back, we’re saved!’”
Maddison’s Season So Far
Despite Keane’s skepticism, Maddison has had some bright moments this season.
In his 22 league appearances—15 of which were starts—he’s contributed eight goals and four assists, a respectable tally for an attacking midfielder.
His standout performance came in November against Manchester City, where he played a crucial role in Spurs’ 4-0 victory at the Etihad.
Keane acknowledged this performance but remained critical of Maddison’s overall consistency.
“That night, he showed the balance between attacking quality and defensive responsibility.
But that’s the issue—consistency. He set a standard there that he hasn’t kept up.”
Spurs’ Injury Woes and Transfer Market Moves
Maddison’s injury—picked up last month—was just one of many setbacks for Postecoglou’s squad.
Spurs have been forced to rely on teenage prospects due to a long list of unavailable first-team players.
During their recent loss to Aston Villa, Tottenham had 11 players sidelined, including Radu Dragusin, Van de Ven, Cristian Romero, Vicario, Udogie, Dominic Solanke, Brennan Johnson, Timo Werner, Richarlison, Wilson Odobert, and Maddison himself.
In response to their growing injury crisis, Spurs were active in the winter transfer window, securing the signings of Antonin Kinsky, Kevin Danso, and Mathys Tel in hopes of reinforcing the squad.
Must-Win Clash Against Manchester United
Tottenham’s next challenge comes against Manchester United in the Premier League this Sunday.
With the club desperate for points and Postecoglou under mounting pressure, this game could prove to be a pivotal moment in their season.
Whether Maddison’s return will be the spark Spurs need remains to be seen, but according to Keane, the answer is far from certain.
