Tottenham’s Cristian Romero Warns Daniel Levy That Lack of Investment is Holding the Club Back from Competing for Titles

Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero has called out the club’s lack of investment as a key reason behind their struggles in keeping up with Premier League rivals.

As Spurs continue to slide down the league standings, Romero pointed to a failure in matching the financial commitments of teams like Manchester City and Liverpool.

Tottenham’s Tough Start to the Season

Currently sitting in 11th place, Tottenham’s 4-3 loss to Chelsea on Sunday highlighted the team’s ongoing issues.

Conceding two penalties and losing an early two-goal lead exposed the cracks in their defense.

The defeat added more pressure on manager Ange Postecoglou, though it’s understood that chairman Daniel Levy is still backing him for now.

However, there’s a clear understanding that results need to improve quickly.

Unmet Expectations and Missed Opportunities

Spurs have managed just one win in their last seven matches across all competitions, with four losses contributing to a disappointing start to the season.

Historically, Tottenham has seen managers come and go during slumps in form, but Romero believes the real responsibility lies with the club’s decision-makers.

He emphasized that it’s the lack of substantial investment that has caused the team to fall behind their rivals.

Romero’s Concerns About the Club’s Investment Strategy

In a candid interview with Telemundo Deportes, Romero discussed how Tottenham’s spending doesn’t compare to other top clubs in the league.

“Manchester City competes every year, Liverpool strengthens its squad, Chelsea invests and improves, and now they are seeing results,” Romero said.

“We need to realize that something is wrong. I hope they realize it.”

He expressed frustration over the cycle of changes at the club, whether it’s the players or coaching staff, yet the same issues persist.

For Romero, the lack of investment is what’s truly holding Tottenham back from competing for titles consistently.

The Strain on Postecoglou and the Team

Romero, however, remains supportive of Postecoglou, despite the team’s tough season.

“He’s a great coach, and we saw that in his first season,” Romero said.

“This season, we’ve faced a lot of injuries, and it’s important to focus on the staff’s efforts, rather than always looking to change things when results don’t go as planned.”

The Argentine defender stressed that he and his teammates are fully behind Postecoglou, appreciating the coach’s methods and the style of football he’s trying to implement.

Despite the criticism, the players are focused on moving forward quickly and improving their form.

The Bigger Picture for Tottenham

Since Postecoglou’s arrival in 2023, Tottenham has spent around £350 million, but the lack of trophies has continued to cast a shadow over the club.

Since Levy’s tenure began in 2000, Spurs have only won one major trophy, the League Cup in 2008.

For Romero, it’s clear that the real issue lies at the top, where decisions about investment and long-term planning are crucial to the club’s success.

As Postecoglou remains the fifth manager Romero has worked under since joining Tottenham in 2021, it’s clear the team is in a cycle of uncertainty.

The question remains: will the club make the necessary changes to push for the titles their squad could potentially compete for?
