Edwards allegedly stated, in an audio recording that has emerged online, that “all white men should have a black man as a slave or black woman as a slave” and that “they’re lower class than us white people”.

Edwards also allegedly said that black people were of a “lower class” than whites.

The recording is only 16 seconds long, and the date and location where it was recorded are unclear.

Investigation and Self-Referral

The Pembrokeshire County councillor has referred himself to the Public Services Ombudsman and has left the Tory group.

Meanwhile, the Conservative Party is investigating the allegations and has not yet suspended Edwards, who also sits as a magistrate.

The Pembrokeshire council, where Edwards represents the Haverfordwest Prendergast ward, has referred the matter to the ombudsman.

Reaction from Officials

The Conservative group leader of the Pembrokeshire council, Di Clements, stated that the allegations are “extremely serious” and added that Edwards left the party group on Tuesday while the matter is under investigation.

The Labour group called Edwards’ remarks “disgusting”, adding that “racism has absolutely no place in our society, let alone in the views expressed by an elected member on Pembrokeshire County Council”.
