Madibogo contacted the popular influencer to discuss rumours about her alleged pregnancy, and to find out more about Nketsi’s upcoming wedding. However, things turned sour when the writer’s details were made public.

Fans of the social media star then hounded Julia Madibogo, and she has branded the pile-on as a textbook case of ‘cyberbullying’. On Tuesday, it was confirmed that the City Press employee will now take legal action.

SANEF condemn ‘infuriating incident’

As a representative body for South African journalists, SANEF are positively fuming with this entire episode. In a recently published statement, the forum labelled the abuse as ‘disgusting’.

What’s more, the editorial group also noted that incidents of cyberbullying against news reporters ‘are on the increase’. SANEF say they are now worried that such unabated trolling is ‘putting lives in danger’.

“SANEF is disgusted and infuriated by the latest incident where fans of social media influencer, Faith Nketsi, decided to abuse and send derogatory messages to City Press entertainment reporter, Julia Madibogo.”

“The abuse came after Nketsi publicly shared Madibogo’s cellphone number with her followers on social media. This was after Madibogo contacted Nketsi, seeking her comment regarding Nketsi’s wedding and rumoured pregnancy.”

“Cyberbullying and harassments of journalists has, in recent times, been on the increase and should be condemned. Cyberbullying does not only put the lives of journalists in danger, but also makes it difficult for them to do their work.”
