Tom Homan, the former U.S. Border Patrol chief, recently addressed concerns raised by Pope Francis regarding the Trump administration’s stance on immigration and its mass deportation program.
In a conversation on EWTN’s The World Over with Raymond Arroyo, Homan defended the policies, claiming that they are aimed at saving lives and reducing human trafficking.
Defending the Morality of Immigration Enforcement
Homan, who served under the Trump administration, explained that the primary focus of the government’s approach is to address threats to public safety and national security.
He pointed out that both he and President Trump had been clear about prioritizing these concerns.
“What the pope needs to understand,” Homan remarked, “is that we’ve made public safety and national security our top priorities.”
When questioned about the moral implications of deportations, Homan, a lifelong Catholic, assured that the administration’s policies do respect the dignity of those being deported.
He argued that strong enforcement measures ultimately protect migrants from the dangers they face along their journey.
He highlighted that, in the absence of such policies, countless women and children face severe exploitation and abuse at the hands of human traffickers.
Protecting Migrants and U.S. Citizens Alike
Homan elaborated on the harsh realities that many migrants endure when attempting to cross the border.
He cited the high number of women who are sexually assaulted by cartels during their journey.
Homan pointed to the administration’s efforts to reduce illegal immigration by 90%, stressing that fewer illegal crossings result in fewer tragedies.
He posed critical questions: “How many women are not sexually assaulted? How many children are not dying while trying to cross the river? How many aren’t being trafficked in the U.S.?”
He also pointed out the public health risks posed by illegal immigration, particularly the ongoing opioid crisis, where fentanyl is smuggled into the country, leading to thousands of deaths.
According to Homan, the Trump administration’s immigration policies save lives by preventing these kinds of tragedies.
Sovereignty and Border Security
Homan wrapped up his comments by affirming the U.S. has a right to secure its borders, just as any sovereign nation does, including the Vatican.
He drew attention to the Vatican’s own strict policies on illegal entry, noting that the Vatican imposes heavy fines and prison sentences for unauthorized migrants.
Homan pointed out that these penalties are even harsher than the ones in place in the U.S.
By invoking the Vatican’s policies, Homan underscored his belief that maintaining border security is a matter of sovereignty and national interest.
He concluded by reiterating that the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement efforts are designed to protect the well-being of citizens and migrants alike.
