Thanks to the Netflix documentary Tinder Swindler, Simon Leviev has gone from scamming innocent women of significant sums of money to becoming an online celebrity.
Following the film’s debut last week, the dating app Conman has been the talk of the internet.
As a result of Instagram followers and Google searches, Simon Leviev, who is now a free man, has grown in popularity.
The 31-year-old Israeli man, who has over 200 thousand Instagram followers, has pledged to share his side of the story.
SIMON LEVIEV BREAKS SILENCE AFTER NETFLIX DOCCIE
In the doccie Tinder Swindler, three females tell their accounts of being duped by Simon Leviev and how they attempted to catch him in the act.
Born Shimon Hiyut, the high profile scammer was arrested in 2019 in Greece after being caught with a fake ID. He was extradited to Israel, where he was convicted of theft, fraud and forgery of documents. However the charges related to crimes from 2011 and not ones he committed as outlined in Tinder Swinder.
In addition, Simon served a mere five months out of his 15 month prison sentence. He now lives as a free man in Israel.
According to Netflix, Simon Leviev did not wish to participate or give a right of reply to the accusations levelled against him. Instead, he threatened legal action. However it seems, he is now ready to talk, and will do so in the forthcoming days.
He wrote on Instagram, before deleting his account: “I will share my side of the story in the next few days when I have sorted out the best and most respectful way to tell it, both to the involved parties and myself.”
“Until then, please keep an open mind and heart.”
TINDER SWINDLER TO BECOME A MOVIE?
Meanwhile, Variety reports that Netflix are in talks to turn the Tinder Swindler into a feature film.
According to sources, the discussion is still in an early phase.
Variety also revealed that Tinder has officially banned Simon Leviev from their dating app.
The popular app told the publication via statement: “We have conducted internal investigations and can confirm Simon Leviev is no longer active on Tinder under any of his known aliases”.
