Tiger Woods won’t be participating in the 2024 Hero World Challenge, scheduled for December 5-8 in Albany, Bahamas.
The 15-time major champion made this announcement on Monday, extending his hiatus from competitive golf.
Absence from the Event
Woods, who is also the host of the Hero World Challenge, had not appeared on the initial player list for the tournament last month.
Despite this, it was expected that he would use one of the three exemption spots available for the event, which features 20 of the world’s best players.
However, Woods confirmed that he would not be competing this year.
A Long Road to Recovery
The 48-year-old golfer last competed in the British Open in July, where he missed the cut.
Shortly after, he underwent microdiscectomy surgery in September to address nerve impingement in his lower back.
This surgery has kept him away from competition, and he has maintained a limited playing schedule due to ongoing injuries over the years.
Woods’ Statement
“I am disappointed that I will not be able to compete this year at the Hero World Challenge, but I always look forward to being tournament host,” Woods shared on social media.
Exemption Spots for Other Players
The three exemption spots for the tournament were filled by Justin Thomas, Jason Day, and 20-year-old Nick Dunlap.
Thomas is a two-time major champion, Day won the 2015 PGA Championship, and Dunlap had an impressive season with two wins on the tour this year.
Looking Ahead
Woods last played in The Open at Royal Troon in Scotland in July, where he missed the cut.
He participated in five tournaments in 2024, finishing 60th at the Masters and failing to make the cut in the other three major tournaments.
As for what’s next, fans will have to wait and see if Woods is able to make a return to competitive golf in the near future.
