Theo Walcott didn’t hold back after Arsenal’s frustrating 0-0 draw with Everton on Saturday, singling out one of the Gunners’ star players for not living up to expectations.
Despite dominating possession with 77% and firing 13 shots at Jordan Pickford’s goal, Arsenal failed to find the back of the net at home against struggling Everton.
Ndiaye Shines Defensively Against Saka
Walcott, who played for both clubs in his long career, highlighted the impressive defensive display of Everton’s Iliman Ndiaye, who was tasked with containing Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka.
Walcott praised Ndiaye for “winning the battle” against Saka, who was unable to score or assist for the third consecutive league game.
“Ndiaye started to enjoy defending, which is a bit of a rarity,” Walcott remarked, noting that the Senegalese winger worked tirelessly to keep Saka quiet throughout the match.
Everton’s Team Effort Earns Clean Sheet
The former Arsenal forward also acknowledged the hard work of the entire Everton team, which helped goalkeeper Pickford secure his sixth clean sheet of the season, tied for the most in the Premier League.
Walcott pointed out how Everton players, including Abdoulaye Doucoure and Idrissa Gueye, rotated positions to support each other defensively.
“They limited Arsenal to crosses, but when Arsenal did get a chance, Pickford was there to pull off saves,” Walcott added.
Arsenal’s Struggles Continue
Despite the draw, Arsenal failed to take advantage of Liverpool’s own slip-up, as they also dropped points in a 2-2 draw with Fulham.
The Gunners now trail the table-toppers by six points, though they still have a game in hand after last Saturday’s Merseyside derby was called off.
Arsenal’s lack of goals from open play remains a pressing issue as they look to close the gap in the Premier League title race.
