Themba Zwane Battles Injuries and Races Against Time to Secure Spot for AFCON 2025 With Mamelodi Sundowns in South Africa

Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Themba Zwane is in a tight race to secure his spot for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. The veteran playmaker, affectionately known as “Mshishi,” has battled injuries over the past two seasons, limiting his game time and keeping him off the Bafana Bafana radar for almost a year.

Struggles With Persistent Injuries

Speaking openly for the first time in a while, Zwane revealed the frustration of recurring injuries. “You want to push yourself, maintain your standard, but after that injury, I pulled my quad while trying to stretch. I was so disappointed,” he admitted.

He described the mental challenge of setbacks: “In my mind, I was like, ‘Eish, there we go again.’ But after a couple of days, I told myself it happened, and I need to focus on recovering and being strong. The support from the team really helps.”

Limited Opportunities to Impress

With just a few months before AFCON 2025 kicks off, Zwane faces limited opportunities to show national team coach Hugo Broos that he’s ready. His lack of playing time under Sundowns’ coach Miguel Cardoso, who is focused on both the CAF Champions League and the Betway Premiership, makes every appearance even more critical.

Staying Positive and Focused

Despite the challenges, Zwane remains determined. “It’s exciting knowing that if I can get back to 100% fitness and contribute for my club, I can contribute for the national team,” he said.

He has committed to extra training and strengthening exercises to regain top form. “For me, it’s about staying positive, pushing myself, and doing whatever it takes to be 100% ready,” Zwane added.

Looking Ahead to AFCON

As the tournament approaches, all eyes will be on Zwane’s fitness and form. His experience and skill could be invaluable to Bafana Bafana, but only if he can overcome the physical hurdles that have sidelined him in recent seasons. For fans, the hope is that Mshishi will be back in action and ready to make his mark on the continental stage.
