Non-league Footballer Alex Fletcher Survives Life-threatening Accident
Bath City forward Alex Fletcher’s life was at risk after he collided headfirst with an advertising hoarding during a match against Dulwich Hamlet in November of last year.
Fletcher suffered multiple skull fractures and required emergency brain surgery.
His family were told by doctors that he “might not make it.”
The accident caused the match to be abandoned, with Fletcher immediately receiving medical attention.
He was placed in an induced coma for a week and spent almost two weeks in intensive care.
The severity of his injuries required the removal of pieces of his skull and vertebrae to alleviate pressure on his brain.
Despite the initial prognosis, Fletcher has made good progress in his recovery, aided by a GoFundMe page that raised £18,000.
Bath City also paid tribute to the non-league star by hanging a banner reading “Super Alex Fletcher” at their home ground.
Fletcher spoke about the experience in an interview with The Guardian and revealed that he was conscious throughout the ordeal, telling himself to stay awake.
He said he knew it was serious once the match was abandoned and admitted feeling guilty about the interruption.
He also shared that he remembers seeing the bright lights as he was wheeled into the hospital, and subconsciously knew he was in good hands.
Fletcher’s family were initially concerned that he might not recognize them or be a completely different person upon waking up, but fortunately, this was not the case.
This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the risks involved in playing any level of football and the importance of player safety.
Despite the challenges he faced, Fletcher’s story is one of survival and resilience.
