What started as a regular night of celebration turned devastating when a beloved college basketball player lost his life in a shooting at a pool party in Texas.
Now, a 17-year-old has been charged with murder, leaving a community mourning and searching for answers.
Rising Star Jamarion Brown Fatally Shot at a Party
Jamarion Brown, affectionately known as “JoJo” by those closest to him, was just 23 years old when he was shot in the head during a pool party in Camp County on Friday.
Brown, a guard for the Henderson State Reddies, had been a standout both on and off the court.
Police arrived at the scene to find him in critical condition. He was rushed to the hospital, but sadly, he didn’t make it.
Teenage Suspect Arrested in Connection With the Shooting
Authorities have now arrested a suspect in the case.
On Wednesday, 17-year-old Onterrian Jamour Newton was taken into custody and formally charged with murder.
According to reports from KLTV, Newton is currently being held in jail with no bond set.
The violence at the party didn’t stop with Brown. Two other people were also shot—one in the leg and another in the hip.
Thankfully, their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
Heartfelt Tributes Pour In for “JoJo”
The shock and sadness have rippled through the Henderson State University campus, where Brown had only spent one season but made a powerful impression.
In an emotional statement, the university’s athletics department remembered him as more than just an athlete.
“JoJo’s warmth and magnetic personality made him one of the most beloved students here,” the tribute read.
“He was more than a teammate—he was a friend, a leader, and someone who truly brought joy to those around him.”
A Teammate, A Competitor, A Role Model
Known for his fiery energy on the court and his selfless nature off it, Brown was described as the embodiment of the “Reddie Spirit.”
His toughness, strong work ethic, and leadership left a lasting mark on the basketball program and the people in it.
Basketball coach Jimmy Elgas spoke of the devastating loss.
“No words can capture how heartbroken we are.
JoJo meant the world to his teammates, to our program, and to the entire campus. His legacy will live on in our hearts.”

Brown’s life, though cut tragically short, was filled with love and purpose.
According to his obituary, he is survived by his fiancée, Sydni Parrish, his parents, and ten siblings.
The tribute described him as someone who “brought light into every room” and lived a life driven by faith, family, and a passion for basketball.
“He left behind countless memories and a legacy of love,” the obituary read.
“Jamarion’s life had an impact far beyond the game—he touched lives, inspired hearts, and will never be forgotten.”
